10 THINGS TO DO ON A HIGH POLLEN DAY

TIPSHAY-FEVERDAILY

I've had allergies since I was a kid. After 30-something years of trial and error, I've figured out what actually works on those days when the pollen count is through the roof. None of this is new. It's just stuff I do that makes a real difference.

1. CHECK THE COUNT FIRST THING

Before I even think about my day, I check the pollen levels. It takes 10 seconds and saves me from walking into a disaster. If counts are high, I adjust my plans. Simple as that.

2. TAKE YOUR MEDS EARLY

Antihistamines work way better when you take them before symptoms kick in. I pop mine with breakfast on bad days. Waiting until you're already miserable means you're behind for the rest of the day.

3. SKIP THE MORNING WALK

Pollen counts peak between 5am and 10am. If you like morning walks or runs, save them for the evening on high-pollen days. Or just do something inside. Your nose will thank you.

4. KEEP THE WINDOWS SHUT

I know, I know. Fresh air feels great. But on a high pollen day, that "fresh air" is basically a pollen delivery system straight into your house. Keep windows and doors closed. Use AC if you need airflow.

5. SHOWER WHEN YOU COME INSIDE

Pollen sticks to your hair, your skin, your clothes. If you've been outside at all, take a quick shower and change clothes when you get home. Otherwise you're just marinating in pollen for the rest of the day.

6. WEAR SUNGLASSES OUTSIDE

This one surprised me. Sunglasses (even non-prescription ones) block a lot of pollen from getting into your eyes. Wraparound styles work best, but anything is better than nothing.

7. DON'T DRY CLOTHES OUTSIDE

Hanging laundry outside on a high pollen day is basically seasoning your clothes with allergens. Use the dryer. Not worth the energy savings when you'll be sneezing into your freshly "clean" shirt.

8. RUN A HEPA FILTER

I keep one in my bedroom and it makes a huge difference for sleep. You can find decent ones for $50-80. It's one of the best investments I've made for my allergies. Clean the filter regularly or it stops doing its job.

9. CLOSE CAR VENTS WHEN DRIVING

Set your car's air to recirculate mode instead of pulling in outside air. Most people don't think about this, but your car can fill up with pollen fast if the vents are pulling from outside.

10. TRACK YOUR SYMPTOMS

This one took me years to figure out. Writing down how I feel each day, even just a quick note, helped me spot patterns I'd never noticed. Certain allergens hit me harder than others, and some days that feel random actually line up with specific pollen spikes. That's part of why I built a symptom tracker into Achoo. Having a record changes how you think about your allergies.
